Statement of faith

2 Timothy 3:16-17 "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." (NIV)

"The Spirit of God uses the Word of God to make us like the Son of God. To become like Jesus, we must fill our lives with his Word.

Quiet-Time Reflections

Week of: February 4, 2013

“On the day that you were born the angels got together.
And decided to create a dream come true.
So, they sprinkled moon dust in your hair of gold,
And star-light in your eyes of blue.
That is why all the girls in town follow you all around.
Just like me, they long to be close to you...” - Carpenters

In the lyrics of the Carpenter’s hit song “Close to You” we get the feeling that Richard and Karen are trying to express through music the sense of love and affection one might have for that special someone on their mind. With Valentines Day right around the corner I thought I might try my hand at expressing through Biblical reference exactly how special you are to the One who created you and How He desires to be close to you.

"Long ago, even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. His unchanging plan has always been to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. And this gave him great pleasure." (Ephesians 1:4-5 NLT)

Some of us don’t always feel very special. Maybe you have been rejected in a relationship and now you feel tossed aside like a piece of old merchandise that someone got tired of. Maybe you have lost the love of your life to death and you feel lonely. There is no more “star-light in their eyes of blue”  It might also be that you feel as if you have disappointed God in some way and you’ve concluded that He is far away from you. The feelings of disappointment, rejection, or the mere fact that Satan often feeds us a sack of lies is the very reason some may need to write a new song this year. If I may, it might go something like this:

“On the day that you were born the Creator got together, and decided to create a life full of blessings and purpose. So, He sprinkled grace upon your head and stamped you with a special seal of His approval…

That is why there’s a lad in town, desperately trying to keep you down. Just like me, send him away, God is always close to you and He desires to help you through….close to you…close to you…

It’s true!  Despite how you might feel or what kind of behavior you engaged in before accepting Christ into your life, you are His special child and if you will let Him, He will fill those empty places in your heart with His love and affection.

Don’t know God? Don’t fret because today is a new day and it only takes a second to call out to Him. If you need assurance that you belong to God, talk to Him right now. Choose to believe that He is who He says He is and that You are who He says you are. Confess your sins and invite the Savior into your life right now in this very moment. Go ahead do it! Gift yourself with something that will last forever, this I know you will not regret.

Because God formed you in your mother’s womb and made you so wonderfully complex (Psalm 139:14, paraphrased) He knows exactly what you need at all times. He saw you before you were on this earth and every day of your life is recorded in His book (139:16, paraphrased). Nothing that has happened to date surprises Him at all and nothing is beyond redemption or restoration.

As an approved child of the Most High sprinkled by His grace, you have something to celebrate no matter how you feel. Let’s give it a shot. We’ll use the words of King David as he wrote about the sovereignty of God.

“How precious are your thoughts about me, O God!
They are innumerable!
I can’t even count them;
They outnumber the grains of sand!
And when I wake up in the morning you are still with me.” – Psalm 139:17-18

Sometimes life does not always turn out the way plan. However, in every circumstance we can be confident that God knows exactly what we need. Matthew 10:30 tells us that God knows everything about us all the way to the number of hairs on our head. Even our earthly parents couldn’t tell us that. This is a key piece of information we should not skim over. If God is aware of everything about us, then we have to trust that He is also aware of everything that has happened to us. Because God places great value on us we never need to fear that of which we cannot understand. All we have to do is surrender it to Him and trust that He will help us through it. If there has been an injustice in your life you can trust God to handle that too (Revelation 21:1-8).

Because we are never far from God’s presence (Romans 8:35-39) we can embrace his love and affection for us each and everyday. God himself tells us how great His love is so that we can feel totally secure in Him. When we suffer any type of trial, disappointment, persecution; or when we’re tempted to become fearful of the unknown, we can rest in the overwhelming assurances that are available to us through the Word of God. The next time you feel a bit lonely, confused or lacking faith, simply open up your Bible and let God love on you. Here are a few suggested verses. Be blessed by what God has to say to you. You are precious to God, now don’t forget it.

Your Alive Because God Wants To Love You by Rick Warren

Heavenly Father help us to embrace your love and affection for us. Help us to see that you are enough and that you desire to help us through this journey we call life. Thank you for creating, approving and guiding us through the tough stuff we come up against this side of Heaven. Give us a renewed sense of hope today and gift us with the sense of your presence all the days of our life. Draw us close to you and never let us go. In Your Son Jesus’ precious name we offer our prayer. Amen.
